District Background

Lalmonirhat subdivision made its debut as a 'district' on 1st February 1984 AD by Dr. Shafia Khatun, the then Social Welfare and Women Affairs Advisor (Minister) to the Government of Bangladesh. Later on 18th March 1984, Lalmonirhat Sadar Thana was declared as 'Upazila'. As a result, the number of upazilas under Lalmonirhat district stands at 5; Patgram, Hatibandha, Kaliganj, Aditmari and Lalmonirhat Sadar. At that time, if the Chinnai, Rajarhat and Gharialdanga Unions of Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station were joined with the neighboring Kurigram District, the number of Unions in the newly formed Lalmonirhat District stood at 41 and the number of Municipalities was 1. Moreover, the area of Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila stands at 104 square miles.

 

Since 1985 AD, Dahgram and Angarpota enclave were considered as an independent union of Patgram Upazila and on August 19, 1989 AD, Union Parishad was auspiciously inaugurated here, as a result, the number of unions in Lalmonirhat district stood at 42. At present, there are 2 municipalities, 5 upazilas and 45 unions in Lalmonirhat district.

 

The first office of the Deputy Commissioner was on the site of the former office of the Diabetic Association, Lalmonirhat. At the end of 1986, the Lalmonirhat District Commissioner's office was shifted to the present Majida Khatun Government Women's College. In the middle of June 1988, it was again moved to its present location.

 

On January 17, 1990, the existing District Commissioner's office and the Collectorate building were inaugurated by the then President Lt. J. H. M. Ershad.
